BBQ Butcher Block Island With Storage

A customer came to me and he had a couple large pieces of butcher block that he wanted to make something out of. The problem was, he had cut a large section off, and it really looked odd due to the size (woodworking “golden rule” on rectangles). After working with it, I came up with this concept and he liked it. I made a large island top, putting both pieces together, which open up on slides to access a hidden box for storage. When closed, you have a very large top with 2 separate cutting boards with there own juice groove. The entire base was constructed from reclaimed oak wood which is great for outdoor furniture. The cutting board is sealed with pure tung oil, giving it a strong seal that is 100% natural.

I had a beautiful piece of spalted pecan that was too small for a table but not something I wanted to split up and use in smaller projects. I designed this project around the top. It is finished out in hard wax finish and a top coat of ceramic.

This is made from some reclaimed wood that looks very rough, but once you cut it open and clean it up it is stunning. This bed is made from reclaimed oak as well as hickory.

Cedar Slab Desk

This is a cedar slab desk. The base is made from cedar posts that I used a draw knife to bring down to size and get all the bark off. I also used it to whittle down the mortise and tenons with a draw knife. The aprin is made from aromatic cedar and all the bolts are old fationed square head black smith bolts. This desk has a hidden shelf under the top where a power strip is located and all power, network, and video cables tuck away.

Pecan Slab Desk

This build had some very specific requirements. The area has a very limited space, that is just a recess into the wall. The desk had to fit within the area, and also needed to have a space to hold the entire audio/video mixer and equipment. I made a large cherry base to hold all the media equipment with air circulation as well as space for wiring. The top is a pecan slab finished with hard wax finish and ceramic topcoat for smooth protection of the surface. I then made a custom surround sound to go around the area to make it a private area, with a door entry.

Armor of God Podium

This was a fun build. It has everything built into this. The podium is made from spalted pecan and cherry. Behind the panels is a 1/2" thick balistic hardend steel. It is wired for network as well as power directly in the podium. I built in a hide-a-way area for all the wires and power which is easily accessible. I also have a false wall built in for when you are exersising your 2nd amendment rights. Also has plenty of storage. The cross on the front is proud of the panel by about 1/4 inch, and the spalted wood in the front panel was selected to give the cross to seem to be halo’d by the Light from the Son above. Very fun build.

Cherry Island

This island has a cherry top with wings that fold down, and is stained with a green stain and poly top coat. The customer on this project had a very small space, and wanted seating area (wings) for her grandchildren to sit at, and also a spot for her cat. If you look close, you will see a small door opening on the side, which when opened, allows for her cat to go in and eat. It also has another passage to the far side to where her litter box is at. All accessible from the front doors. It is also designed with a large opening for a large cutting board and other items and the drawers are deep. I also built matching bar style stools to match the island.

This classic Trestle table is made from a cherry wood top with maple legs, a cherry stretcher with walnut wedges. The table has matching cherry and maple chairs along with benches. Each chair has 16 mortis and tenon joints. Each mortise joint on the base has a pin in it for strength. The finish is with a traditional pure tung oil which is quite hardy.

Pecan Trunk with a secret!

This spalted trunk has a secret. Inside it has 2 separate areas with small passage way through to them. If you look at the outside, you will find a small entry portal. This trunk is actually a litter box and feeding area for our cat. It works perfectly! No smell, and no mess. The cat enters on the far side, eats food and then passes to through the second area in there where his litter box is. The entire box is made from pecan and has raised panels of spalted pecan.

Dresser Restore

I was asked to restore a dresser for a customer. The dresser was painted and the top had a venear that was pealing off. I found some nice 4/4 oak and built a new top for it. I also stripped all the varnish and paint off it, and found some stunning rays and flecks. Sanded and refinished the wood and put new hardware on.

These spalted pecan cabinets are a conversion I made for an existing space. This space was origonly just shelves with a curtain over it. I built this from pecan stiles and rails with raised spalted pecan centers.

A friend of mine has a stack of old wood that was used for years in a construction company. They used the wood for laying down across ditches for heavy machinery and trucks to drive over and keep them from getting stuck in the mud. I purchase this wood and make projects from it from time to time.

This farmhouse bed is a lot like the farmhouse table with steel wool and vinegar with pine and western cedar posts. The rails are attached with old style blacksmith square head bolts.

Farmhouse Table With Benches

This Farmhouse table is 10 feet long, and the finish on it is a bit unique. This table is made with pine top and bench tops are pine, the frame of the table is western cedar. For the finish on this type table I mix steel wool in water and vinegar and let it stew for 48 hours. The vinegar breaks down the wool and colors it. Then I add the mixture to the wood. The cedar and pine both naturally react to it, causing the wood to darken. The results can be dramatic. The cedar can turn almost a black in color, while the pine will brighten up and really show the color. This table was then toped with multiple coats of poly.

This is one of my early farmhouse table builds. This one is pretty unique with breadboard ends and clear finish. The base is a double trestle with pegs that allows for the quick breakdown of the entire base, and removable pins securing it to the top.
