Persevering Under Trials

Persevering Under Trials

Items to focus on when my thoughts betray me.

Am I in fellowship?

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 john 1:9

consider  myself dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus Rom 6:11

put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh according to its lusts Rom 13:14

put on the full armor of God Eph 6:11

Is this Test/trial/discipline from God?

God is allowing this test, so recognize the fact that all testing is God providing growth in my spiritual life!

Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.  And let endurance have its perfect results, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing Jas 1:2-4

blessed is the man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life… Jas 1:12

in this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you will have been distressed by various trials…1 Pet 1:6

Do we need to use our power to get through our testing?

the Christian life begins with a man “in Christ”—that is to say, when by faith, we see ourselves seated together with Him in the heavens.  Most Christians make the mistake of trying to walk in order to be able to sit, but that is reversal of the true order.  If at the outset we try to do anything, we get nothing; if we seek to attain something, we miss everything.  For Christianity begins not with a big DO, but with a big DONE.  Thus Eph. opens with the statement that God has “blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ” (1:3).  We are saved by resting in the Lord Jesus.  We did nothing whatever to save ourselves; we simply laid upon Him the burden of our sin-sick souls.  There is no limit to the grace God is willing to bestow upon us.  He will give us everything, but we can receive none of it except as we rest in Him. (Sit, Walk, Stand, Watchman Nee)

Is this test really that bad?

If I step back from my thoughts and lies that my flesh is telling me, I will realize that this test is minor.  I am not being persecuted with threat of death as some of my brothers in Christ around the world.  I am not dealing with the possible death of myself or a loved one as some of my other brethren are dealing with.  No, my test is minor, but my flesh makes it major.

but with the temptation will provide the way of escape (victorious conclusion to the test), so that you will be able to endure it. 1 Cor 10:13

is God providing this worry or fear, or anxiety?

No!  If I am anxious, I am out of fellowship.  If I am worrying, I am in the flesh.  If  I am fearful, I am not trusting God.  Recognize the fruit of the flesh verses the fruit of the spirit.

    Galatians 5:19–23 (NASB95)

19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality,

20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions,

21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Be anxious for nothing but in everything, by prayer and supplication,  with thanksgiving, make your request known to God… and the peace that surpasses all comprehension will guard your heart and mind “in Christ” Jesus.  Phil 4:6-7

Perfect love casts out all fear….1 Jn 4:18

and who of you by being worried, can add a single hour to his life?  (christ speaking)  lk 12:25

So, cast all your anxiety on Him for He loves you.  1 Pet 5:7

So, what do I focus on next?

When I find myself out of fellowship with the Lord due to trials and worries, I focus on what Christ IS providing for me right now!

Do not focus on what I want.  This is what has me in this problem in the first place!  I am self focused instead of Christ focused.

Sanctify Christ as Lord of your heart!  1 Pet 3:15 He is my LORD.  Do I recognize Him as Lord or am I sitting in His seat?  Am I the focus of my life, or is Christ?  We must submit to our Lord and His plan for our lives, not live our plan out our way.  Check your focus!  If I am Christ focused, then REST!  That is the only work I have!  Recognize that anything I am doing, is from SELF, but as I rest “in Christ” and allow Him to work through me He is glorified and He will complete the work.  If I start working, He will let me finish and fail and I will find myself anxious and miserable again.  It is a never ending circle until I sit down and Rest in HIM.

How do I move forward?

What God has started He will finish!

Philippians 1:6 (NASB95)

6 For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.

Jude 24–25 (NASB95)

24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy,

25 to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.

2 Timothy 1:12 (NASB95)

12 For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.

Ephesians 3:20 (NASB95)

20 Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us,
